History

In the 1970's Dr Geoffrey Chandler, the Senior Doctor at Magnolia House Surgery in Sunningdale, recognised the urgent need for a centre catering to the elderly in the Ascot District.

The Day Centre was intended to provide vital support, allowing the elderly to maintain their independence at home for a long as possible. Here, they would benefit from a warm and welcoming environment through the day, socialise with others, participate in activities, and enjoy morning coffee, a delicious two-course lunch, and afternoon tea.

In 1975, a wonderful luncheon club was established with the support of like-minded individuals in the community, including June Martin MBE and current trustee and life-time president Elvira Fletcher. Initially it operated from the Council offices at Kingswick House for 2 days a week. Later it moved to the Cordes Hall in Sunninghill, and after some time, a portacabin was set up at the current site. The project was mainly funded by Help-the-Aged and the portacabin was supplied by Hallams of Langley.

Back in 1978, thanks to the hard work of Dr Chandler and his team, a site was secured from the Borough and funds raised to build our current premises. Dr Chandler took the helm as the first Chairman of the Day Centre, with June Martin as Secretary. In 1981, Dr Chandler passed the torch to Charles Riley, a local District Councillor. Mr Riley had a vision for our new brick premises, and the portacabin was flown to Coworth Park School. These new brick facilities were open 5 days a week, welcoming anyone over 55 within our local community.

June Martin fondly recalled the opening of the Centre by Lord Lieutenant Gordon Palmer. As the ribbon was cut, all eyes turned to the crystal-clear skies of that day, catching a glimpse of Concorde soaring past from London Heathrow.

In 1991, Charles Riley was succeeded by June Marin as Chairperson. June Martin dedicated herself tirelessly to the voluntary sector in the Ascot District and was honoured with an MBE in 2000 for her outstanding community service. In 2006, she stepped down as Chairperson of the Ascot District Day Centre but remained as Honorary Life President until her passing in 2020.
